GN! Workshop: Making and Breaking Rules by Eric Zimmerman

Eric Zimmerman, game designer & Arts Professor, NYU Game Center

Making and Breaking Rules – A game design workshop

We all know that games are fun to play. (At least they usually are!) But do we really know how they work? And more importantly, what do games have to teach us as artists and designers that we can bring into our own creative practices? Designed for people coming from any background, Making and Breaking Rules is a 4-day workshop where we will spend time playing, analyzing, modifying, and making games. We will explore some of the fundamental concepts around games and design, including systems dynamics, social play, storytelling through games, designing meaningful interaction, the cultural landscape of games, and the iterative design process. While all of our work is relevant to digital design, the majority of the activities will be based in physical and social games, including tabletop games and playground-style play. So there are no technical requirements for the workshop. There will also be time for discussion about working as a professional game designer. Please come prepared to play and participate.

Workshop schedule:
Monday 12th Feb, 9-13
Tuesday 13th Feb, 9-13
Wednesday 14th Feb, 9-13
Thursday 15th Feb, 13-17

Many of the exercises in the workshop come from The Rules We Break, Eric’s most recent book on game design. The Rules We Break is based on Eric’s 30 years of teaching design through play and games. Divided into three main sections (PLAY, SYSTEMS, and DESIGN), it contains hands-on exercises that leverage game design to explore essential concepts for anyone designing systems and creating experiences.

The workshop is open for all Aalto University students and staff, the students of GN! School Network & Friends of GN!. Prior registration will be required due to limited seats. Unfortunately, there will be no option for remote participation.

Register by 8th February at: https://forms.gle/y1bjnB9Kak9WSikK8
The seats are limited and we prioritize the Game Design and Development Aalto University major students. A confirmation letter to all accepted participants will be sent by 9th February 2024.
